About Us

Proudly serving the communities of: Merrillville, Crown Point, Schererville, Dyer, Griffith, Hobart, St. John, Munster and Lake Station.

The Northwest Regional SWAT Team multi-jurisdictional emergency response team comprised of nine police departments here in Northwest Indiana.  Our Team is responsible for the protection of approximately 200,000 residents in an area that is over 130 square miles.

Our mission is to provide member agencies with a tactical response to critical incidents, which are defined as but not limited to the following:

  • Armed/Suicidal Subject(s)
  • Barricaded Subject(s)
  • Hostage Situations
  • Sniper Situations
  • High-Risk Apprehension
  • High-Risk Warrant Service
  • Dignitary Protection
  • Civil Disturbances
  • Disaster Assistance
  • Terrorist Incidents
  • Special Assignments

Our organization began in 1992, when the Merrillville Police Department established a five-officer SWAT team.  In 2004 this team became multi-jurisdictional with the addition of the Crown Point and Schererville Police Departments. Since that time we have added additional police agencies every year, with Munster and Lake Station police departments joining us in 2013. This brings our total number of local police agencies to nine, and a total of thirty dedicated and professional police officers making up the largest tactical Team in northern Indiana.

Law enforcement tactical teams such as ours operate in very dangerous conditions with unconventional hazards, while being exposed to unpredictable weather conditions here in the Midwest.  For the medical safety and protection of our officers, we are very excited to be adding four tactical medics to our Team in the upcoming months. These health care professionals are paramedic-rated and above and are trained in treating critical life-threatening injuries.  Having medics deployed as part of our Team allows us to care for injured citizens, officers and suspects immediately – when seconds can count in determining survivability.

Along with basic SWAT school, team members attend training with other SWAT teams around the country. They have attended schools sponsored by various law enforcement agencies including the FBI, and retired members of the U.S. Army (DELTA), and British SAS.

Our Team members dedicate many hours each month to refine their specialty training skills and stay physically and mentally prepared for any crisis situation where our assistance is needed. Our organization relies solely on donations from businesses and the general public to stay operational. Our Team members fund most if not all of their training expenses and dedicate countless hours of their personal free time to training.
